1 October 2014 brings with it a number of employment law changes that all HR and people managers need to ensure they are familiar with, including the introduction of time off to accompany an employee to ante-natal appointments. This article outlines the changes for you.

Time off to accompany to ante-natal appointments

From 1 October 2014 time off to accompany someone to ante-natal appointments is introduced, but it will be limited to two appointments only, each lasting no more than six and a half hours. To find out more read our detailed article

Equal Pay audits

An employer who is found to have committed a breach of equal pay legislation will be subject to an order by the employment tribunal to carry out an equal pay audit.

There are limited exceptions if, for example, an employer has recently carried out a qualifying audit.

This power applies to claims issued on or after 1 October 2014.

National minimum wage increase

The national minimum wage increased to £6.50 (from £6.31) for age group 21 and over and to £5.13 (from £5.03) for age group 18 – 20.  For details of all the rates see our earlier article.

Protection for reservists

If an employee is dismissed exclusively (or mainly) because they are a member of a reserve force there is no requirement for any minimum period of service.

Small and medium sized employers can also recoup payments to employees called out for service.
