As is usual October sees the start of new employment laws; yet this year there are only two of any real interest.

The Deregulation Act 2015 will introduce the following key change:

Right of Sikhs to wear a turban

The right of Sikhs to wear a turban in place of a safety helmet is being expanded to almost all occupations in Great Britain.

There are a few exceptions such as in the armed forces and emergency services.

New National Minimum Wage Rates

From 1 October 2015 the following new rates take effect:

  • Standard adult rate (for workers aged 21 or over) £6.70 up from £6.50.
  • Development rate (for workers aged between 18 and 20) £5.30 up from £5.13.
  • Young workers rate (for workers aged under 18 but above the compulsory school age) £3.87 up from £3.79.
  • Apprenticeship rate (for apprentices under 19 of age or those aged 19 and over but in the first year of their apprenticeship) £5.35 up from £5.08.
From April 2016 the new rate for workers aged 25 and over called the National Living Wage will be introduced. Full details will be provided in due course.
