Briefing Note

Updated guidance published | Teacher misconduct: The prohibition of teachers

This updated guidance applies to all types of schools and covers advice for employers, teachers and disciplinary panel members.

The advice provides information on professional conduct panels which are held as a result of teacher disciplinary action and for the purpose of the regulation of teacher conduct. The guidance concentrates on factors to be taken into account when deciding if a prohibition order on a teacher should be made following a finding of:

  • unacceptable professional conduct.
  • conduct that may bring the profession into disrepute.
  • conviction, at any time, of a relevant criminal offence.

The guidance was published on 31 October 2015 by the National College for Teaching & Leadership and a copy can be accessed here.
